Went into Balançoire tonight, stole everything that wasn’t nailed down, then had to fight the Chunk Of Ice timer to get enough Frozen Tangerines for the Seed of Headaches because this game is ridiculous.

But anyway, Balançoire is a bizarrely reasonable place by Mira standards. The locals say it’s called Borough of Illusion due to the mist making it look like it shifts.
(Also if you give everything French names I’m gonna add the é and ç regardless of what the game says)
A rather normal-looking fantasy town with cobbled floors and mosaic walls. Title card: “Balancoire, Borough of Illusion”

Most of the town knows Kalas, since he lived there.
We get a more precise timeline: his grandfather arrived twelve years ago, along with a doctor who left soon after. HMMM.
And it’s like his grandfather could infuse life in inanimate things. HMMMMMMM.
Random NPC 1: “Hey, is that you, Kalas? Where have you been all this time? What are you up to these days?” Random NPC 2: “I gotta tell ya, life in this town sure changed for the worst once your family was gone.” Random NPC 2: “It was as if those inanimate machines had been infused with life by your grandfather.” Old man: “Hmm, there was also a doctor who arrived with you.”

Hey remember that doctor who was definitely not weirdly curious about how your grandfather was doing? Wonder if it’s related

Something else in that first convo is now catching my eye. It looks like lore dumping: the doctor mentions Kalas’ artificial wing being unusual, different from the ones in the Empire. Kalas says it’s by his grandfather.
Doctor asks how grandpa’s doing.
Doctor Larikush asking Kalas “And how is [your grandfather] doing?”.

Another breadcrumb: Mélodia’s parents succumbed to illness years ago, and she only narrowly made it. This will turn out to be VERY important.
Random NPC: “Lady Melodia has become such a healthy young girl, that it’s hard to believe she had a near-fatal illness.”

We get another legend from an old woman, with another bunch of variant elements, a bit more detail here and there.
I kind of love that you get different, partially conflicting bits of legends. That’s how folk tales work!
Old Lady: “But one day, a swirling whirlpool engulfed the land, and Mira fell into a dimensional rift.” Old Lady: “Mira was about to sink into an abyss so deep there was no hope of it ever emerging again.” Old Lady: “It was then that a group of mysterious wizards appeared from the depths of the Earth. The [cont]” Old Lady: [cont] wizards, calling themselves the Guardians, saved Mira somehow.”

The Guardians allegedly had parting words warning of NOT UNSEALING THE FIVE EVILS MACGUFFINFS, but also new elements.
Malpercio won’t be revived, not fully, because he got too broken for that. But a “white-winged darkness” would show up and make a mess anyway.
Guardians: “Should they be unsealed, all five evils unleashed, [cont]” Guardians: “[cont] our world would succumb to the everlasting curse of the evil god Malpercio.” Guardians: “However, should the white-winged darkness alight upon this land, [cont]” Guardians: “[cont] the world will disappear without a sound, swallowed by a maelstrom of chaos.”

Probably definitely unrelated: the Ominous Feminine Voice in the intro said something about “Beautiful white wings for you... For the word, death and destruction”.
I’m sure it’s fine

The Guardians ended with a call to the Ocean, which especially catches Xelha’s attention (and is in the opening cutscene).
Makes sense since as Ice Queen of Wazn she’s carrying the damn thing within herself for some reason, we’ll learn that VERY LATE.
Guardians: “Our only hope is the Ocean, long lost...” Xelha: “Our only hope is the Ocean, long lost...”

Hilariously the guide I’m following for getting all the things was complaining about Yet Another Old Woman With A Legend To Tell
Kalas: “I’ve never heard that story before.” Old Lady: “The young seldom listen to the musings of us elderly. Wouldn’t you say?”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:59 PM · Nov 09, 2020 Permalink
I’m pretty sure the fact that this is all real and very much happening should not be discussed in front of random people
Lyude: “I figure the “five great evils” must be referring to the End Magnus?” Gibari: “It sounds a lot like the King’s story in Diadem.” Xelha: “I know this is a prophecy... or should I say warning...” Xelha: “But I still don’t understand what it all means.”

Savyna’s always the pragmatist, and Lyude the anxious mess reasonably concerned about splash damage I guess?
But hey it’s just a legend, it’s fine, it’s fine.
Savyna: “That’s the nature of prophecy. We will know when the time comes.” Lyude: “Yet wouldn’t it be too late by then?” Old Lady: “Well, it’s an old legend. We no longer know how much of it is actually true.” Old Lady: “Don’t worry yourselves too much.”

I remain confused as to how the darn Trio could have been SNEAKY, considering that Ayme especially seems to thrive on shooting things while taunting them loudly.
Random NPC 1: “Remember the fire two years ago? I heard it wasn’t an accident, but rather the Empire’s doing.” Random NPC 2: “No way. I heard the gadget shop’s old man neglected his experiment.”

Once we’ve explored and looted everything, Mélodia is back and we can go to the Manor NEXT TIME.
We get to recruit Mizuti and then things will get weird again, yay!
Mélodia: “I’m fine. Thank you for your concern.”
