Alright, let’s go take care of that boss battle. There will be another pile of dialog bookending that, so I probably won’t get much else done?

Well now I remember why I really dislike this entire plot arc, GROAN
Lia @liareplaysbk · 10:50 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Let’s enter the cabin!
Kalas standing at the cabin’s door. Kalas: “So where is this thing that Gramps left for me?” Offscreen voice: “I would also like to know about my father’s legacy.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 10:52 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Surprise, it’s the Trio, which apparently did not blow up with the Goldoba.
Gibari: “Aren’t you supposed to be dead?!” Ayme: “Sorry to disappoint you, but it’s not that easy...” Folon: “... To get rid of us.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 10:55 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
“Our fight at the Goldoba” definitely ended with you all blowing up, and keeping a low profile seems... not easy for this bunch, but SURE.
Interesting that even they had no idea about Mélodia, because that makes their absence in Anuénué even weirder.
Giacomo: “After our fight at the Goldoba, we kept a low profile and watched the story unfold.” Giacomo: “I know that the Emperor and Mélodia were on good terms, [cont]” Giacomo: “[cont] but I never realized the girl was controlling the Emperor all along...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 10:57 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
‘Cause Giacomo was there in Sadal Suud, in Diadem, in Mira, but not in Anuénué, which was a big part of this particular bit of drama. Gonna call plot hole on this one.

Belaboring the “BUT Y NO BADDIES” point a twinge...
Gibari: “Finally. And no Empire in sight. How refreshing.” Kalas: “But why didn’t the Empire show up this time?” Gibari: “Yeah... You’d think that Folon guy would be on our tail.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 10:59 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
This entire convo is a lot of “I GUESS”
Giacomo: “But keeping watch from Anuénué was a wise decision.” Giacomo: “Now we know the whereabouts of Larikush, too.” Kalas: “You’ve been following us!”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:01 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
So. Much. Rehashing.
Giacomo: “Georg and Larikush feigned their deaths perfectly twelve years ago.” Giacomo: “Imagine my surprise when, nearly a decade later, [cont]” Giacomo: “[cont] I heard rumors that there was an excellent engineer in Mira.” Giacomo: “I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the man had a grandson with only one wing.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:03 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
I GUESS
Kalas: “He loved using his inventions to help people out. There was no end to his tinkering!” Giacomo: “Did you notice, Kalas? His gift was the ability to talk with objects.” Giacomo: “This helped him when he was working for the Empire. He would modify the experimental Magnus, [cont]” Giacomo: “[cont] all the while discussing theories and results with it.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:06 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
More loose ends that really did not need tying up...
It makes for neat worldbuilding at least.
Giacomo: “I heard my grandmother, Georg’s mother, lost her way in the Lava Caves when she was young.” Giacomo: “Though Georg’s mother didn’t notice, the power of the evil god must have tainted her.” Giacomo: “When Georg was born, the taint was passed on to him...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:08 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Larikush was already hinting at Georg’s obsessive behavior, this confirms it. Must have been quite the terrible dad.
Giacomo: “Back then, Georg was totally obsessed with his experiments.” Giacomo: “They took precedence over everything else. It was almost as if he was possessed.” Giacomo: “In retrospect, the power of the End Magnus may have been driving him.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:09 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
YES PLEASE LET’S HAVE THE DARN FIGHT
Giacomo: “Enough talk. Ayme, Folon, we shall proceed.” The entire party reading for battle.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:13 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Giacomo throws a bunch of weird things at the wall, which start emitting a field of... hypertoxic soundwaves apparently.
This is solely for drama value because the only effect is not making Guardian Spirit spells appear, and they’re too random to rely on to begin with.
Three golden devices jammed into the wooden wall. Giacomo: “We had to infiltrate a lab in Mintaka for these.” Giacomo: “A Guardian Spirit is made up of a voice and power transferred from another world.” Giacomo: “A resonance field of Hypertoxic Soundwaves smothers the voice and negates rhe Spirit’s power.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:13 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
It’s kind of a summary of this whole arc: introducing new elements for twists and turns, without really solid grounding for them. Meh.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:27 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
We win the battle, which means we lose anyway, and Giacomo moves in for the kill.
Savyna, Kalas and Xelha facing a defeated Ayme, Giacomo and Folon. Giacomo: “Humph. You’re doing well even without the Spirit’s aid. But “well” is not good enough...” Kalas, on the ground: “Argh!!” Giacomo: “Give my regards to Georg and Fee.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:29 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Flashback time! It’s the night of Fee’s death again, but this time we get a bit more of the scene. Kalas was not going to make it either.
(It’s still not the entire scene welp)
Kalas: “Please... Don’t leave me... Don’t leave me alone!” Kalas: “Fee... I’m sorry... I don’t think I can make it...” Kalas, flat on his back next to Fee.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:32 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
This is officially too much Kalas Lore Dump in too few hours.
Like, sure, have both the “you’re artificial” and “by the way you contain your also artificial brother” things, but space them out A LOT MORE.
Kalas, kneeling on the floor: “Argh... I remember now.” Giacomo: “At last you realize who you are.” Giacomo: “On that night, two years ago, Fee gave you his life... [cont]” Giacomo: “[cont] allowing you to absorb his Magnus.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:34 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
We get one more bit of flashback, showing said event.
A spiral of light coming out of Fee’s body. Fee’s body has disappeared, as the spiral of light enters Kalas.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:37 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
This makes Kalas the one link left to Georg’s entire research, but Giacomo doesn’t care anymore and has ALSO gone full nihilist.
Giacomo: “But all this is no longer important to me...” Giacomo: “Fee’s story is now over!!” Giacomo: “My father, Georg, is dead. So is the Emperor...” Giacomo: “When you and Larikush die, everything will be over... Yes, everything...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:42 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
In the meantime, he’s crushed Kalas’ Winglet under his foot. So the thing... floats off the ground, causing the statue in the back to break and reveal a NEW Winglet. I GUESS.
Cut from those screencaps: Xelha going “Kalas!” a lot.
Giacomo, as Kalas’ Winglet creates a strange force field: “...?!” Kalas, on the floor again: “Argh!!” Kalas, as everyone looks up at a Winglet emerging from the statue: “It’s Winglet... Gramps?” Kalas, adjusting the new Winglet onto his back: “Is this what he left for me?”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:43 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
(Sure hope Lyude’s got good trigger discipline ‘cause that rifle is not being pointed safely in this scene)
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:46 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
MOAR FLASHBACK, this time featuring a Younger Kalas portrait that’s almost adorable.
Mostly it’s Georg dodging questions by over-explaining Wings of the Heart.
Kalas: “Gramps... Why do I only have one wing?” Georg: “As emotions are involved, so is the mind.” Georg: “That is to say, the electrical signals from the left and right hemispheres...” Kalas: “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Gramps!”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:54 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
Fee doesn’t get that much characterization, and to me both his portrait and voice casting play against the “sweet angel child” angle the text tries to go for.
Also are his ears pointy? And that goes unremarked on? I GUESS
Fee: “Hey, Kalas. It’s okay to have only one wing.” Fee: “You’re my big brother, either way.” Fee: “I don’t have any wings, but I don’t even care.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 11:58 PM · Dec 08, 2020 Permalink
And it all ties back to the second Winglet. Done with flashbacks, HUZZAH
Georg: “I will do my utmost to make you a wing.” Georg: “A wonderful wing that will grow as you do.” Georg: “Kalas, I also intend to make you another wing, [cont]” Georg: “[cont] one that will help you, should you be caught up in a fierce struggle.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:00 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
This all gets Kalas back in fighting mode and it’s time for round 2 of the exact same boss battle.
Kalas: “Giacomo... You said Fee’s story was over.” Kalas: “I won’t... let that happen!”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:09 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
We prevail again, and this time it’s an actual victory.
We, er, might actually have murdered Giacomo for real this time ‘round?
Giacomo, lying on his back: “It’s over... It’s all over...” Giacomo: “Ayme, Folon... you all right?” Ayme: “Yeah... Giacomo.” Folon: “Barely...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:11 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
His dying words to his goons are that they should help us, because the world falling into darkness is bad actually.
Giacomo: “You two should join forces with Kalas... help them in any way you can.” Ayme: “Okay, Giacomo! Now stop it!” Folon: “Giacomo... Don’t die on us!!”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:14 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
[cw: death]
Yop, gone for good.
Giacomo: “Kalas... Stop them... Stop... Mélodia!” Kalas: “I will... I promise you, Giacomo.” Giacomo: “Life is long when you live it, oh but so short when you look back...” Giacomo: “Farewell... Kalas...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:18 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
[cw: death]
I’m not sure how the two goons are supposed to want to work with us when we’ve literally murdered the one person who held their world together.
Ayme: “...?! Giacomo?! Giacomo!!” Folon: “No!!!” Xelha, praying: “Cast light upon the darkened earth... Save those lost in despair...” Giacomo’s body disappears in a halo of pure white light.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:22 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Excellent points all around and oh-so-ripe for post-game fanfic to go ham with.
As I’ve maybe mentioned, if there’s ONE underlying theme to this entire game, it’s that forgiveness and redemption are possible and necessary, but not built on forgetting.
Gibari: “You leavin’?” Folon: “I know Giacomo told us to join you, [cont]” Folon: “[cont] but that doesn’t mean we can just forget the past and be all chummy now, does it?” Ayme: “And to Kalas, I’ll always be a foe, the one who killed his grandfather and brother.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:24 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
On their way out, one last bit of info: they were orphans from Azha, thrown to Georg to experiment on.
Ayme: “Both Folon and I are from Azha Village...” Ayme: “Geldoblame bought us as guinea pigs for Georg’s experiments...” Ayme: “Kalas, I don’t know or care what you think, [cont]” Ayme: “[cont] but the two of us, we’re happy Georg’s gone!”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:26 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
And that’s this veeeeeery long segment done, phew.
It’s got really great bits of background but the beat-by-beat is so much more of a mess than it should be.
And yes, we again get teleported away from a treasure chest so we’ll get to come back.
Gibari: “Should we get goin’, too?”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:49 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Said teleport is back to Corellia’s throne room, where not much has changed except for “some reports”, which are pointers to character-specific sidequests.
The Celestial Alps were Kalas’ and mandatory, the other ones are optional AFAIK.
Corellia: “Welcome back, everyone.” Kalas: “Any news of Cor Hydrae Castle?” Corellia: “No, the enemy has yet to make a move.” Corellia: “Various reports have come in from each nation, however, that may be of interest.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:51 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Catranne’s on infodesk duty, and will repeat those as many times as we need if we forget where to go.
Each quest gets us the last Class Up item, the level 8 finisher, but mostly a whole bunch of story.
Catranne: “We have all sorts of news, from all over the world.” Catranne: “Strange things have been happening ever since Cor Hydrae Castle appeared.” Catranne: “What would you like to hear about?” Dialog options listing all the islands.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:53 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Nothing to report for Sadal Suud or Wazn...
Catranne: “Well, there hasn’t been much news from Sadal Suud, actually.” Catranne: “Both our castle and town are all right, Your Majesty. Nothing much has happened back home.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:55 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Diadem’s got a weird fish...
Catranne: “They say the legendary “Master of the River” has been spotted near Nashira. This appearance could be [cont]” Catranne: “[cont] due to the emergence of Cor Hydrae.” Catranne: “A fisherman’s weapon is supposedly lodged into its back.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:57 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
... which makes it of interest to the fisherman of the group.
Gibari: “Master of the River? With a fisherman’s weapon? That must be the Lord of the Greater Celestial [cont]” Gibari: “[cont] River.” Gibari: “Last time anyone set eyes on it was over a hundred years ago...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 12:59 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Anuénué’s got a weird book.
I wish this was a touch more specific, because by default it’ll send you on a goose chase in the library, unless you remember that the Principal of the School of Magic was mumbling about a strange book.
Catranne, to Xeha: “Ah yes, Your Majesty, we heard there’s an old, Forbidden Book of Magic somewhere here in Anuénué.” Catranne: “We thought it might be helpful, and looked all over the place, [cont]” Catranne: “[cont] but we couldn’t find it.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:00 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Xelha is wrong here, it’s not that kind of book, but it’s hers to take care of anyway.
Xelha: “A Forbidden Book of Magic...” Xelha: “I see... If we could find it, it might prove useful when we attack Cor Hydrae Castle.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:03 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Mira obviously has to out-bizarro everyone and has a ghost ship full of crying ghosts. Sounds fun and joyful!
(The idea of Catranne-the-half-bird getting “goose bumps” is also hilarious and I wonder whether there’s also a pun in Japanese)
Catranne: “There’s a rumor that a phantom ship, similar to the Battleship Goldoba, is floating through the [cont]” Catranne: “[cont] Trail of Souls...” Catranne: “People say they’ve heard ghosts crying out from within, gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.” Catranne: “What makes it even more spooky is that the ghosts are calling out a name...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:05 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Hey you know who the plot hasn’t been a jerk to for at LEAST five to ten hours at a good clip? You bet, this one’s for Lyude.
Catranne: “They’re calling for “Lyude.”” Lyude, concerned: “Ghosts? Calling me? What could that be all about?”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:08 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Finally, someone in Alfard decided that protecting Azha with the unit that slaughtered them just two years back was a brilliant idea.
Savyna has old scores to settle with them.
Catranne: “Villagers in the desert there have been surrounded by hideous monsters.” Catranne: “We’d like to send additional help to their village, but we have our hands full with other things right now.” Catranne: “Currently the Mad Wolf Unit is protecting the village, so nothing bad has happened so far...” Savyna, concerned: “Azdar and his men...”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:11 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
We’d also heard about some Children of the Earth staying groundside earlier, this confirms we have to go check. Mizuti’s curious about what the best friend / protégé is up to, after all.
Catranne: “Oh yes, some of the Children of the Earth are still beneath the Taintclouds.” Catranne: “From what I’ve heard, the Great Kamroh, and someone named Krumly. Oh, and also a boy named [cont]” Catranne: “[cont] Kee.” Great Mizuti: “Kee, too?”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:14 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
This is wrapping for “go grind up before you start the real endgame”.
Corellia: “Now, then... Many of these reports seem to be of concern to you.” Corellia: “I suggest you let us handle the plans to counter Cor Hydrae, and act as you see fit. Perhaps following [cont]” Corellia: “[cont] up on some of the reports would be wise.” Corellia: “Please come back when you have dine what you need to do.”
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:16 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
And that’s it!
I’m not set on what order to tackle the quests in just yet, might just follow character order i.e. Xelha, Gibari, Lyude, Savyna, Mizuti.
There’s also a couple combos to do with the things in the Celestial Alps cabin, and some more fetch quests.
Lia @liareplaysbk · 01:17 AM · Dec 09, 2020 Permalink
Next time: probably a bunch of errands, then Xelha’s quest.
